Overseas Guardrail Installation Guide: Common Construction Mistakes & Solutions

Qualified guardrail materials cannot guarantee project acceptance. On-site installation quality directly determines the actual crash protection performance.

Insufficient post embedment depth Embedment depth is critical. Posts with shallow embedment will be pulled out during impact. For soft soil foundation, deeper embedment or concrete base is required. Rocky mountain sites can use embedded sleeves.

Wrong lap direction of guardrail beams Beam joints should overlap following traffic direction. Reverse installation leads to joint separation under impact and total failure of the barrier system, which is heavily checked by site supervisors.

Improper bolt tightening torque Bolts should not be fully locked. W-beam guardrail needs limited sliding space for energy absorption. Over-tight bolts prevent deformation; loose bolts create large gaps and unstable structure.

Verticality control of steel posts Tilted posts change the force bearing surface and reduce containment level. Builders need to check verticality and post spacing to maintain continuous and smooth barrier alignment.
