With the continuous upgrading of global engineering standards, overseas steel procurement and project acceptance have become increasingly standardized. Four major steel standard systems, including GB, ASTM, EN and JIS, are widely adopted in international trades. Accurate material comparison and standard matching are essential to avoid customs clearance problems and project rejection.

1. GB Standard (Chinese Standard)
GB is the most common and cost-effective standard for general construction and steel structure projects. Typical grades Q235B and Q355B feature sufficient stock and stable delivery. Most small and medium overseas infrastructure projects accept GB steel with SGS or BV third-party certificates. However, GB materials cannot replace ASTM or EN grades for high-pressure, marine and critical industrial projects.
2. ASTM Standard (American Standard)
ASTM is mandatory for North American, Middle Eastern, oil & gas and mining projects. Common grades include A36, A572Gr50, A106 Gr.B, A240 304/316L. It requires strict control on tensile strength, impact toughness and chemical composition. High-end industrial and pressure vessel projects strictly adopt ASTM materials without random substitution.
3. EN Standard (European Standard)
EN standards are the most rigorous globally, widely used in EU high-end infrastructure, bridges and pressure equipment. Main grades S235JR, S355JR, 1.4307 and 1.4404 require CE certification and EN10204 3.1/3.2 third-party test reports. European projects focus on low impurity, high toughness and full production traceability.
4. JIS Standard (Japanese Standard)
JIS standards are popular in Southeast Asian and Japanese–funded projects. Typical grades SS400 and SM490 deliver stable performance, precise tolerance and excellent surface quality, suitable for mechanical manufacturing and building steel structures. Most Southeast Asian clients accept JIS and GB equivalent substitution for general structural parts.
5. Key International Matching Rules
General structural steel can be equivalently matched: Q355B ≈ S355JR ≈ A572Gr50 ≈ SM490. For low-temperature, pressure-bearing and oil-gas projects, ASTM or EN standards must be strictly followed. EU orders require full CE documents and 3.2 certificates. Middle East and North American projects demand complete and traceable MTC reports. Any material replacement must be confirmed by the project owner in advance.
